Dr Seun Solomon Bakare

About

Dr Seun Solomon Bakare is the Executive Director of the Justice Bridge Foundation, where he leads a regional movement-lawyering effort dedicated to protecting sexual and gender minorities and other criminalised groups across West and Central Africa. His work at the Foundation brings together litigation support, legal research, and the training of a new generation of public-interest lawyers committed to advancing equality and challenging punitive laws. He guides the organisation’s strategic direction, strengthens partnerships across the region, and oversees programmes that build legal capacity, document violations, and sustain advocacy in environments where rights are under strain.

He is an experienced public international law practitioner and academic. Over the course of his career, he has represented clients before the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the ECOWAS Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court. His previous roles include Director of Programmes at Amnesty International Nigeria, Chief Executive Officer of the Leicester LGBT Centre, and Head of Human Rights at Pride in London. He has also worked with the African Commission and the ICC in various legal and research capacities, contributing to regional and international jurisprudence.

Dr Bakare holds a PhD in international criminal law and global justice from Leiden University, an LLM in human rights and democratisation from the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria, and an LLB from Obafemi Awolowo University. He is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. His work as a scholar and practitioner spans Europe, North America, and Africa, and he continues to draw on his expertise in international law, LGBT+ rights, and human rights advocacy to advance the mission of the Justice Bridge Foundation.
